Ahhh the chook situation continues to decline. First we had extremes of heat in Jan that knocked them about. Then a mite infestation we are struggling to get on top of (courtesy of Franny the frizzles visit). Then the rain and flooding. Their existing coop proved woefully inadequate and got sodden. The mould grew. One of the chooks breathed in the spores and is now in my study in a cat cage fighting for her life. If she makes it to Monday she will be in the care of the vet. And of course we lost Hoppy.
They now have a new coop fashioned out of the tin wood shed nearest the house. But that leaks too as the water gathers on the side and seeps in through the joins. It rains like a wet season here. You can't win! Everything is so wet!!! So I have built a false floor out of the old kitchen doors and covered them in comfy straw. They are raised on wooden chocks so that the air can circulate and they will stay dry. I hope that will finally do the trick.
We have also come to realize one of them is mostly blind. It explains why she keeps walking through the food and water bowls. Her eyes are milky.
