| What a view! |
I interviewed the inspiring retreat leaders, Satyagandhi (SG) and Akasamati (AK), about their plans and vision for this retreat.
What was clear is that this is no ordinary Bodhisattva Ideal retreat, nor is at a Web of Life retreat based on the work of environmentalist Joanna Macey (which SG has run a few times before). Rather it is something new and exciting.
I asked SG why she was running this retreat and not a Web of Life. “Joanna Macey’s work is implicitly based on the Bodhisattva ideal in the world, but it is not explicit and is designed for non-Buddhist activists. Bhante is our teacher and we want to bed our retreat in his teachings.” AK emphasised ‘We will include a lot more explicit Dharma and look to re-language the work of Joanna Macey and make use of some of her framework”.
The dynamic duo will spend one and a half days focused on building a sense of experiential connection and developing gratitude for the world around us. There will be activities like studying the night sky through a telescope, and wondering at tiny lifeforms in a microscope. They will also be engaging with the land of Naga Naga to explore our ancestry. The approach will be to take retreatants on an experiential journey yet still allowing a sense of spaciousness; which is why they have opted for a week retreat instead of a weekend.
A retreat based on Joana Macey suggested to me a retreat intended for aspiring environmental activists. But I was quickly corrected. “People interested in that can come along but also those seeking inspiration through the Bodhisattva Ideal to go out into the world and act for the good of others in a way that inspires them. Whether that social justice, asylum seekers or even meditation, “ said SG. AK added, “The retreat is not proscriptive. It is aiming to connect with the heart and whatever comes of it for that person.”
Most of all they emphasised how much fun it will be and invite everyone to come along! I will certainly be there so if you want to sign up or know more email SG on Satyagandhi@optusnet.com.au, or ring them on 02 6567 1416.
